Caffeine is a natural stimulant found in more than 60 plants and is popular around the globe, and is found in the coffee, chocolate and tea we often drink. It's important to be clear that the amount of caffeine in a drink varies depending on the ingredients and how it's made.

Although scientists consider caffeine to be safe, excessive consumption may always cause some concern, and of course you can have problems with too much water.

Why are people extra concerned about caffeine?

It is estimated that 80% of the world's population enjoys drinking coffee on a daily basis. Due to its stimulating effects on the human body, scientists believe that caffeine has a number of health benefits, such as increasing alertness, improving athletic performance and mood, and boosting metabolism.

Both the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) and the European Food Safety Authority (EFSA) define safe caffeine intake as no more than 400 milligrams per day and no more than 200 milligrams in a single intake, or no more than 3 milligrams per kilogram of body weight.

Caffeine content also varies by tea variety

Black, green and white teas are all made from the leaves of the tea tree. What makes them different from each other is when the leaves are picked and how much they are oxidized.

The leaves of black tea are oxidized during processing, while white and green teas are not. This gives black tea a distinctive strong flavor and also causes more coffee to precipitate out of the leaves when the tea is brewed in hot water.

A 237 ml cup of black tea contains an average of 47 milligrams of caffeine, but can contain as much as 90 milligrams of caffeine. This means that for an average 500 ml beverage on the market, a full cup of black tea will contain up to about 190 mg of caffeine. In comparison, the same 237-milliliter cup of green tea contains only 20 to 45 milligrams of caffeine, while each cup of white tea contains 6 to 60 milligrams of caffeine.

The caffeine content in green tea powder tends to be even higher, with each half teaspoon of about 1 gram of matcha powder typically containing 35 milligrams of caffeine.

It is important to note that commercially available herbal teas are said to be caffeine-free, but a 237-milliliter cup of herbal tea still contains 12 milligrams of caffeine. That means that this dose is already considered to be insignificant.

Caffeine content can also be affected by the method of tea brewing

The brewing method has a significant impact on the caffeine content of tea. Teas that are steeped longer and have warmer water tend to have more caffeine.

For example, a cup of Starbucks' Tazo tea steeped for one minute in 177 milliliters of hot water heated to 90 to 95 degrees Celsius will contain 40 milligrams of caffeine. The amount of caffeine increases to 59 milligrams after steeping for three minutes.

In comparison, green tea steeped for 1 minute under the same conditions contains 16 mg of caffeine. This more than doubles to 36 milligrams after 3 minutes of steeping.

To summarize, based on the information provided, the tea with the highest caffeine content is usually black tea. This is because black tea is made after a process of complete fermentation, a process in which the polyphenols in the tea undergo an oxidizing reaction that promotes the formation of caffeine. The caffeine content of black tea is relatively high compared to other types of tea, with the amount of caffeine in each cup of black tea usually ranging from around 40-70 milligrams, and even higher in some varieties.

It is important to note that while black tea has a high caffeine content, whether it is the highest for a particular tea also depends on the specific variety and production method. For example, certain Dahongpao or Pu'er teas from specific origins may also have high caffeine content if they are fermented enough.
